Automatic Backup vs. Thumb/HD/Tape Backups
These days, full development schedules and towering to-do lists
overflowing from yesterday can get in the way of your customers
making sure that their data backups get done right and on time.
Yet, server crashes and data loss are a reality, so backups must
get done. The impact of data loss can be catastrophic.
Most IT professionals will admit that manual backups can be
tedious, but so is recovery from tape. There's nothing worse
than going from tape to tape looking for an uncorrupted file or
two that are simply not there because data was not being backed
up regularly. In the worst cases, sometimes nothing can be done
and the business takes a hit.
Transitioning from manual to automatic backups is the answer.
Automatic backups are critically important to ensuring that
backups not only get done, but also are completed correctly.
Even in the hands of the most competent and well-intentioned
professionals, manual backups expose your customers' data to
errors, omissions and data corruption. In a recovery emergency,
corrupted data is useless.
Manual backup media like tape, hard drives and thumbs are not
meant for a long life and mobility because they are particularly
susceptible to damage and degradation. More than half of all IT
professionals experience tape failure at least once per week and
degradation and damage play a role.
What's more, taking data offsite on tape, thumb drive or hard
drive exposes data to theft or accidental loss. Many states
require companies to notify their customers if sensitive
information like contact information and credit card data is
lost or stolen. Imagine the bad press and potential liability
for that kind of information getting into the wrong hands—"Gee,
I could have sworn it was in the backseat (or trunk) of my
car…or on that thumb drive I tucked into my shirt pocket…" Don't
let that be your customer's best defense. Simply put, automatic
backups eliminate the risk of lost data, corrupted files and
theft.
