Agent vs. Agentless Backups
When it comes to adding a new piece of software, device driver
or agent to a perfectly functioning server, change can be a very
bad thing. The next thing you know, you have a server crash and
application instability.
At least that's how your customer looks at it, and that's why
they often resist making changes to their existing systems,
especially when it comes to data backups—and they're not wrong.
Agent-based backups are bad for several reasons, because they:
• Consume precious server resources
• Introduce potentially incompatible drivers
• Slow down the server
• Run with super-user (i.e., unfettered) privileges, introducing
potential security problems
With side effects and risks like that, why fix what isn't
broken? That is, until you need a reliable backup for a full
system restore…oops.
Thankfully, agentless backups have none of these problems
because the backup server connects as just another node on the
network, leaving the rest of the system unaffected. In fact, the
amount of resource load allocation required is no more than any
other user or workstation added to the network. And, access to
the agentless backup server can be restricted to read only,
reducing potential security problems. Best of all, because
there’s no need to install software, agentless backups cannot
cause servers to crash.
Granted, there are certain isolated cases that require special
agent-based backups, like laptops and home workstations with
irregular access to the office network, but for everyone else,
an agentless backup just makes sense. It's one change that will
be welcomed by your customers.
So become an agent of positive change for your customers by
introducing agentless CncOp backups (pronounced
sink-up) from
Carroll-Net. After all, positive change is nothing to fear. |

CncOp Agentless and Agent-Based Backups
In most cases, agentless backups offer the most reliable way to
back up your customer's system without running the risk of
system instability. Still, some cases like laptops and
workstations require an agent-based backup.
That's why Carroll-Net offers both options. No matter what their
needs, CncOp agent and agentless backup options allow your
customers can mix and match. Most customers prefer agentless
backup because of its simplicity and no need for server
resources, but for those who require special agent-based backup
needs, we've got them covered—at no additional charge.
