To Catch a Thief: Protecting Backup Media
Most people dismiss the thought of server theft because the very
idea seems ridiculous, but let's think of what it would take for
someone to break into one of your customer's buildings—or
yours—and steal confidential information.
First, they’d need to talk their way past the front desk and
move down the halls to the server room. Then they'd need to
disconnect the server and try to walk nonchalantly past staff,
hoping no one notices that the office server is down, let alone
that there is a stranger walking down the hall with a server
tucked beneath his or her arm.
Not very likely, right?
Wrong. If you think you're out of the range of server theft,
think again. It happens every day. In fact, it happens so often
that many states have passed laws making it a crime to conceal
data theft from the public.
So now, let's think like a real thief.
Most data thieves take the simple route when staking out a
business. Instead of sneaking around buildings to steal
confidential data, they’ll simply stake out its personnel, like
the office manager who takes the backup tape home or the IT
professional who thinks he's keeping his confidential data safer
in his trunk than in the office. Maybe the IT professional pops
into the supermarket after work to pick up a few things, leaving
a very easy backseat target, or maybe the office manager's home
gets broken into over the weekend while he or she was away.
No matter how it happens, the data is gone, leaving their
company wide open to potential liability, bad press, and losses
that range from minute to catastrophic, depending on the type
and amount of information stolen. In that light, it's never
really a good idea to move confidential information out of the
building—and now, your customers don't have to.
